A Vermont home is either on a private well or on a municipal supply, and that single fact changes almost everything about which system belongs in your basement.
Private wells receive no municipal pre-treatment, so whatever is in the aquifer arrives at your fixtures. Limestone bedrock drives hardness across much of the state, and iron-bearing formations are common in Washington, Orange, Addison and Lamoille counties. Bacteria, arsenic, uranium and sediment are all well-water concerns here, and none of them announce themselves by taste.
Municipal customers in Burlington, Montpelier, Barre and elsewhere get water that meets state and federal standards, but standards do not govern taste. Chlorine and chloramine leave a chemical smell, and aging distribution pipe can add sediment and trace metals on the way to your tap.
Either way the first step is the same: find out what is actually there. Our free in-home test covers hardness, iron, manganese, pH, total dissolved solids and chlorine. It does not cover PFAS, arsenic, lead, nitrates, uranium or bacteria - those need certified lab analysis, and we will say plainly when your situation calls for it.
